"Alex Cross" (2012)

Staring: Tyler Perry, Matthew Fox, Rachel Nichols

Synopsis: (Courtesy IMDB) A homicide detective is pushed to the brink of his moral and physical limits as he tangles with a ferociously skilled serial killer who specializes in torture and pain.

When I first saw the trailer for "Alex Cross" I will admit, I was drawn right in. It was not because I was a fan of the novels, at this point I had never read them. It was simply the performance I was seeing from Matthew Fox.

However, after it was released, the reviews began tanking and it quickly dropped out of the theaters to sit in the long waiting line for the DVD release.

Well after snatching this up for a weekend viewing, I can say.... was it great? No. Was it enjoyable? Yes. I think this is a film that suffers from reviews that are not entirely true.

Let's start with the story. "Alex Cross" is a prequel to the 1997 and 2001 films "Kiss the Girls" and "Along Came a Spider" and is based on the James Paterson novel "Cross." So, saying that the outcome is predictable is not entirely fair. If you saw the other films, it's going to be predictable. The story follows Detective Dr. Alex Cross (Perry), a Detroit Homicide Detective, who is brought in on a case to help track and capture a serial killer known as the Picasso Killer (Fox). As the investigation continues, the killer begins a personal cat and mouse game with Alex, that begins to take some serious personal turns. The story is decent and does still contain a few surprises to keep your attention.

Tyler Perry, better known for his cross-dressing role as Madea, is bearable as Alex Cross. His performance gets the job done but does not do anything special to elevate the film. What really lifts this from a bad to decent film is the performance by Matthew Fox. Fox's role as the Picasso Killer is fantastic. Fox perfects every line, every tick, and every bit of body language to give the killer a real deranged creepy feel. Fox is the glue that holds this film together and makes it work.

If you are a fan of the novels, or of detective cat and mouse stories, check this one out. However, do not look for this to become a successful franchise, unless they can can find a lead actor that can raise the level of the story.

"Here Comes the Boom" (2012)

Staring: Kevin James, Selma Heyek, Henry Winkler

Synopsis: (Courtesy of IMDB) A high school biology teacher looks to become a successful mixed-martial arts fighter in an effort to raise money to prevent extra-curricular activities from being axed at his cash-strapped school.

"Here Comes the Boom" is a family comedy that was highly publicized, but never hit it off with the critics. I can understand why, but at some point I think we need to stop comparing every film to the great classics and maybe accept them for what they are supposed to be, a fun break for a couple hours.

"Here comes the Boom" will not impress you with it's original story ideas, or it amazing acting, but it will entertain you and most likely make you laugh. The story is simple and straight forward, a school is struggling for money and decides to shut down the music program. Kevin James, a teacher who was once teacher of the year but now could care less about his job, decides that he needs to help save the music after he wanders in to a music class and is blown away by the music and the love the teacher (Winkler) has for it. While trying to come up with an idea, he happens to view a UFC match on TV and learns that the losing fighter still makes $10,000 just to show up and decides he could do that. His venture into the octagon goes about as well as you would expect, but in the end he learns some life lesson and grows as a human being. While the story is basic, straight-forward, and some what predictable it makes it no less enjoyable.

I found myself not only enjoying my time with this film, but also laughing quite a bit. Kevin James is his normal funny self and when you combine it with the comedy of Henry Winkler, you are in for some gut busting funny moments. Selma Heyek picks up the rest of the movie with her performance. When all three are together, it is highly enjoyable.

As I mentioned earlier, this is not going to win any awards, or be on anyone's best films list, but it does not mean that it is not a fun film. I think, at times, we put so much emphasis on being original (not saying it's not important) and being the next great film, that we pass up some great movies that might be predictable, but it does not make them any less enjoyable.

Why not take a break and enjoy yourself??
"Stranger Than Fiction" (2006)

Staring: Will Ferrell, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Dustin Hoffman

Synopsis: (Courtesy IMDB) An IRS auditor suddenly finds himself the subject of a narration only he can hear: narration that begins to affect his entire life, from his work, to his love-interest, to his death.

I have always been a mixed fan of Will Ferrell. I sometimes find myself almost in tears laughing at his current film and enjoying myself. Other times I sit barely smile, just waiting for the credits. Fortunately, this was one of his more enjoyable films.

For me. enjoyable doesn't really describe my feelings for this film. I love this movie.

It all starts with a change of pace from the normal Will Ferrell style films. This is really more of a mixed genre movie as it is a mixture of comedy and drama. However I tend to place it more in the drama genre.

The story revolves around the character of Harold Crick, an unassuming IRS auditor, going through the same monotony of everyday life until one day he begins hearing a voice that begins narrating parts of his life with great accuracy. At first the voice shocks him, but he eventually begins to just live with it until one day it predicts his death.

This prediction sets off a chain of events as Harold attempts to figure out how to stop his impending doom. But what if he is just crazy??

The acting in this is superb. Will Ferrell raises his game above that of his normal ridiculous characters. He delivers a believable and sometimes sadly tragic character that you can not help but root for. Maggie Gyllenhaal gives a great performance as Harold's love interest. Dustin Hoffman delivers the kind of excellent performance we've come to expect from him.

The power of this film is really the story. This is a tragic comedy that delivers an interesting idea in a new and fresh way, it has the ability to make you laugh and cry at the same time, something it does with ease. Do yourself a favor and check this one out.

V/H/S (2012)
Staring: Calvin Reeder, Lane Hughes, Adam Wingard

Synopsis: (Courtesy of IMDB) When a group of misfits is hired by an unknown third party to burglarize a desolate house and acquire a rare VHS tape, they discover more found footage then they bargained for.

"V/H/S" is another film in the overly saturated found footage category. Unlike most other found footage films, this one does have a bit of a fresh feeling as it is also an anthology movie, wrapped in another developing story.

As the men hired to locate a VHS tape from a run down home enter the house, they find a body surrounded by a pile of unlabeled VHS tapes. Not knowing what the tape they are supposed to find looks like, they decide to split up and search the house while one stays behind to investigate the tapes in the TV room.

This is where the found footage idea comes into play. As the robber places each tape into the VCR, we get a new found footage film, a total of 5 films (not counting the robber story), each directed by different directors.

While V/H/S is not a great film, it is not terrible one either. Although I found no interest in the beginning story of the robbers, I enjoyed some of the short films. My favorite being "10/31/98." This short story revolved around four friends on their way to a Halloween party. When they arrive at the house, they find it empty and begin to search the house. Thinking it to be an elaborate Halloween prank, they head to the attic, where they walk in on what looks to be an exorcism being performed on a woman tied to the wall. When they interrupt out of anger for the brutality being inflicted on the young lady, an angry presence begins attacking the would be exorcists. The friends untie the girl and attempt to get her out of the house, the house itself comes to life as it tries to stop them.

The other short stories were good, not great, and none of them were memorable.

The acting is mediocre, no stand out performances, but then again, this is a semi low budget independent horror film. So I guess you can not expect much.

While I can not highly recommend this film, I will say if you enjoy horror films and find yourself sitting staring at the wall, it couldn't hurt to turn it on.

So as most of you know by now, JJ Abrams has been in recent discussions with Disney to direct the next "Star Wars" film. When this news broke, I thought the social media sites were going to explode.... literally.

While the reaction has been somewhat mixed, I feel that this is the direction the series needed to go. No one can say that the last three films were in anyway near the level of the original trilogy (not to say the new ones will be either) but with Lucas' constant tinkering, it was time for him to step away from the series he created.

With the huge hole left without Lucas at the helm, it was up to Disney to find the next best thing. That is what they found with JJ Abrams.

Mr. Abrams enters the directors chair with a lot of success already under his belt. His involvement with hit TV shows like "Lost" and "Fringe" made him a household name. However it was the magic he performed saving the "Mission Impossible" and "Star Trek" franchise from becoming completely irrelevant, along with his original idea films "Cloverfield" and "Super 8," that shot him into stardom.

This broad list of achievements is the reason I sleep sound at night, comfortable with the decision that Disney made. While almost all of the projects mentioned were huge successes for Mr. Abrams, they all shared one thing in common, none of them suffered from being repetitive in design or lazy in story. JJ Abrams was able to enter each film series' world, expand on it, and leave without destroying it. Something that "Star Wars" is in desperate need of.

While only the future can tells us if this was a good decision for the "Star Wars" universe, I for one will sit with eager anticipation for my next trip to that galaxy far far away......Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11761042580581995224noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7230706750928997170.post-50129516483193146312013-01-24T19:01:00.000-08:002013-02-10T16:15:44.482-08:00DVD Daily 1/24/13

"The Cabin in the Woods" (2011)

Staring: Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison

Synopsis: (Courtesy of IMDB): Five Friends go for a break at a remote cabin in the woods, where they get more than they bargained for. Together, they must discover the truth behind the cabin in the woods.

"Cabin in the Woods" is a fresh breeze in an otherwise stale, worn out genre, that is horror. It takes everything that is cliched about the horror genre, rubs it in your face, just enough to make it's point, then rips the rug out from under your feet.

This is a film that is hard to do a review on for the fact that it is better seen without knowing anything about it. The plot is complex beyond what you believe the story to be about.

"The Cabin in the Woods" was written by Joss Whedon, known for his TV show hits, "Buffy" and "Firefly", and more recently the summer block buster "The Avengers." Just like his other works, this story is entertaining and fresh.

The only thing about this movie that I might complain about is the acting. At times, the characters almost seem a bit soap operaish, but it honestly works with the way the film is supposed feel. This is a film that is more satirical then anything, and was not meant to be taken completely serious.

If you have been waiting to see this......why?? Go!! Run to your local store, or Redbox, and pick this up. You will not regret it!

****************** SPOILERS BELOW *****************

As the film progresses, we learn that the characters are part of an elaborate ritualistic sacrifice to appease the gods of old and keep them from destroying the earth. We quickly learn that every other sacrifice around the globe has failed, and it is now up to the United States to complete the sacrifice. Just as it looks like the outcome is all but set in stone, two characters find a secret elevator and descend into a facility that contains the puppeteers that have been controlling them. This is where it gets good.

No one can say that the last 45 mins of the film is not the best part. I felt so much joy as the characters descended down the glass cube elevator, looking at every creature and monster that existed in this world, and every Easter egg hidden within. When the monsters are let loose, the carnage and chaos caused, changes the whole feeling of the movie. Yet, it still feels right.

By far my favorite thing about "The Cabin in The Woods" is the ending. I find that a lot of times during horror films when the world is in danger, I secretly hope for it to end. Just for something a little less predictable, but alas the hero always shows up and saves the day in just the nick of time. Not this time, as the sacrifice fails and is not completed. The film ends with the gods rising from the center of the earth and the destruction begins. Oddly it is somewhat satisfying.

A little hidden Easter egg I had to share before I go is for those who are also gamers. As the camera zooms out on the glass cube as it descends, if you look a bit to the left and at the other cubes directly around the characters' cube you can pick out three monsters, the witch, boomer, and tank from the "Left 4 Dead" games. These were added due to a plan to release a DLC which brought the "Left 4 Dead" characters into the world of "The Cabin in the Woods." The DLC would allow your character to fight their way from the woods, to the cabin, and eventually into the facility. Unfortunately, this was scraped when MGM began running low on funds. Next time you watch, have the pause button ready and your eyes open.
The different stories of Oz have always fascinated me. "The Wizard of Oz" is a cinema treasure as everyone knows. "Return to Oz" was a completely different film from the original, yet I still immensely enjoyed it. Now, we get a new chapter in this land of magic and fairy tales and it stars James Franco.
#6: The Wolverine:
I may be a bit in the minority here, but I enjoyed "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." Now I will say it is no way on the same level as the other "X-Men" films, but it combined two things I love.... mindless action and superheroes. I think Hugh Jackman is fantastic as Wolverine, and I can not wait for him to reprise his role.
#4: Iron Man 3:
Marvel has released some great superhero films lately, but I don't think any character is nearly as popular as Robert Downey Jr's Tony Stark. While Iron Man 2 did disappoint, it still was a good comic book film. I expect this sequel to bounce back big time.
Leonardo DiCaprio has developed into a great actor, and how he still has not won an Oscar is beyond me. "Gatsby" seems to have Oscar nomination written all over it.
#2: Sin City - A Dame to Kill For:
I was blown away by Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez original noir style film. While sometimes unrelentless in it's violence, one could not help but to be drawn in to this comic book brought to life. Bringing back the all-star cast of the original makes this a film to see.
#1: Man of Steel:
Superman has always been my favorite superhero, so it would take a lot to knock this one from the top of my list. While Christopher Nolan is not directing this film, he did contribute to the story and we know what amazing things he did with the Batman franchise. Putting Zack Snyder in the director's chair could go either way, but we can guarantee it will at least look good.
"The Possession" (2012)
Staring: Natasha Calis, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kyra Sedgwick

Synopsis: (Courtesy of IMDB) A young girl buys an antique box at a yard sale, unaware that inside the collectible lives a malicious ancient spirit. The girl's father teams up with his ex-wife to find a way to end the curse upon their child.

When I first saw the trailer for "The Possession" one thought instantly came to mind, "really another one." It seems common place today that when you want to release a horror film you make it about demon possession. So avoid I did.

Well I was lucky enough to place this into my DVD player, and well.....

Surprise!! It is exactly what I thought it would be, a cliched predictable, sometimes laughable film, coated in just enough entertainment to make it digestible. How it made so much money at the box office is beyond me.

The movie is supposedly based on a true story. I did some digging and from what I can tell the only thing true about this is somebody, somewhere, owned a Dybbuk box and thought weird things happened around it. So he sold it on eBay. That's it, everything else is pure Hollywood. So what is a Dybbuk box? Well that is the new twist to this film. A Dybbuk box is a wine cabinet which is said to be haunted by a Dybbuk, a Jewish demon. So we get a break from traditional Catholic exorcism films and get to watch a Jewish one instead.

So let's talk story. Em (Calis), talks her father (Morgan) in to buying an antique box at a yard sale, despite the creepy lady screaming "NO" at her from her bedroom window. She gets it home, opens it and releases the Dybbuk, which apparently makes her super hungry and lets her spit demon moths from her mouth. From there it terrorizes everyone, the father figures it out, no one believes him, so on and so on. We get it, it happens in every horror film.

The one redeeming thing in this film is the acting. Natasha Calis is superb as Em, and Jeffery Dean Morgan is very believable as the desperate loving father. Unfortunately that is where the praise ends for me.

While this film did enough to keep me from turning it off, that is about all it did. I have seen this all before and could figure out what was going to happen before it did. The ending on the other hand..... we won't talk about that, I'll let you decide.
"Dredd" (2012)
Staring: Karl Urban, Olivia Thrilby, and Lena Headey

Synopsis: (Courtesy of IMDB) In a Violent, futuristic city where the police have the authority to act as judge, jury, and executioner, a cop teams with a trainee to take down a gang that deals the reality-altering drug, SLO-MO.

When I first heard they were releasing an updated version of "Judge Dredd" I was a bit apprehensive. Sure while the original Sylvester Stallone film entertained me, it was by no means a great film. I have also seen how reboots have turned out over the last few years (Nightmare on Elm St. anybody?) So alas I did not drop the dough to see this film in all its 3D glory.

That was a terrible decision....

After my recent viewing of this film, I can only say... It was great!! "Dredd" has a completely different feel from the original, which now seems like absolute trash.

The filming of "Dredd" is much darker and grittier then the original, more along the lines of "The Crow" and "Dark Knight." The city feels desolate and hopeless. The people are scared and will cooperate with the criminals out of pure fear of what will happen if they don't. It really sets the tone for the whole movie.

Karl Urban gives Dredd a bit more personality, while keeping the tough guy action hero persona going. This was a bit of a surprise for me as he never removes his helmet during the entirety of the film. Yet, he is able to portray everything he needs to through his voice and body language.

While the story is simplistic, (and I can't believe I'm going to say this but...) the story is exactly what it needs to be. The action is where this movie thrives. While in the original we explored Dredd's origins and traveled through a post-apocalyptic world. "Dredd" focuses on what we care about, Dredd dealing justice to criminals. After the initial beginning of the film and character setup, it quickly turns into a non stop action film reminiscent of "Die Hard" as the characters become trapped in an apartment complex controlled by a ruthless drug cartel. These high action scenes may be the reason to pick up the 3D Blu-Ray of "Dredd."

Now I guess I should clarify one thing. While I have been praising the heck out of this movie, I do not want to give you the false impression that it is a great film. While I did compare different features of this film to classics like "Dark Knight" and "Die Hard," I must admit it is not on the same level as those films. This film is a check your brain at the door, high action movie, which is personally what I love. So if that is not your cup of tea, I won't blame you for passing this one up, but I will warn, you are missing out on some pure fun.

My DVD Daily review today is "Trouble With The Curve," the newest Clint Eastwood film. The film revolves around Gus (Eastwood) an aging scout for the Atlanta Braves. Before heading out to scout the player everyone believes will be the next big star in Major League Baseball, Gus discovers that his sight is starting to diminish and his friend Pete (John Goodman) is worried about him heading off on his own. Pete takes it upon himself to contact Gus' daughter Mickey (Amy Adams) to go out on the road with her father. Mickey and Gus' relationship has never been considered a good one and Mickey blames her father for not being around while she was growing up. As they head out on this scouting trip, they meet up with Johnny (Justin Timberlake) a young man who was scouted by Gus and is now a scout for the Boston Red Sox. As the trip continues Mickey and Johnny begin a growing friendship, while Mickey sets out to heal the fracture in her and her father's relationship. This is a story about family and finding your spot in life.
I was very excited to see this film as I have enjoyed most of Eastwood's more recent films. After watching this, I can say I enjoyed it, but not as much as I had hoped. While the story did give me that feel good feeling I was looking for, it all felt a little predictable. Eastwood once again takes up the mantle of portarying a grumpy older man, who is going through life by himself. While I enjoy Eastwood and he plays this part so well, it is pretty much the same role I saw in "Million Dollar Baby" and "Gran Torino." Amy Adams puts forth a good performance, probably the best performance in the film. Timberlake, however, just has not grown on me as an actor. He feels a bit too forced when the emotional scenes come on. Now while it might sound as if I did not like this film, that is not entirely true, while it suffered from many downfalls it still kept my attention and entertained me. I guess that is the important thing. If you enjoy Eastwood's other more recent films check this one out. Just don't expect an Oscar worthy film.
For my first DVD daily post I checked out Tim Burton's Frankenweenie. This is the forth stop motion feature film from Tim Burton and the first that is not a musical. The story is based on an original idea and short film made by Tim Burton in 1984. The film revolves around a boy, Victor Frankenstein, who is a loner with his only friend being his dog, Sparky. When Sparky is tragically killed in an accident, Victor turns to an idea he received from his science teacher, Mr. Rzykruski, to use electricity harnessed from lightening to bring his beloved dog back from the dead. As rumors spread around the school that Victor has succeeded in bringing Sparky back, the other kids set off on a plan to steal Victors experiment and use it to win the science fair. What follows is a tale of chaos released upon the local town and the one boy who can save them.

Tim Burton's most recent tale, while entertaining, is not his best stop motion tale (that is still reserved for Nightmare Before Christmas.) Anyone familiar with Tim Burton's other stop motion films will not see anything different in this movie. The characters' faces resemble skeletons or other horror monsters, and it still has plenty of references to horror classics. The film tells a story of love and loss in its own quirky Tim Burton way. All I can really say is, if you enjoy Tim Burton's other works you will more than likely enjoy this new tale. However, if you are looking for something new or out of the ordinary this may not quite be the film for you. Either way, I say give it a shot.

I give Frankenweenie 3.5 out of 5 electrified dogs.
Best Buy is currently doing 2 different Trade and Save offers in their stores. The first deal allows you to trade any small electronic device limit of 3 per person per day for a minimum of $5 on a gift card. I recently used this deal to get rid of a few old flip cell phones that were taking up room in a drawer. The second deal is called Trade in to Trade Up. This deal allows you to trade in any DVD for $5 off any Blu Rays $9.99 and up. These are great deals. With this deal I was able to snag $78 worth of Blu-Ray's for $10 when all was said and done. For more information on the small electronics trade click here. With 2013 now here what better way to kick it off then with a trip to the local theater. However with so many high profile films out, what should one waste his time and hard earned money on. This time I decided on a little less known (and that's a bit of a stretch) film that has been generating a lot of buzz "Silver Linings Playbook." I can truly say that this romantic dramety has restored a bit of my faith in modern film story telling.

For those unfamiliar with this film it stars Bradley Cooper as Pat, a man who suffers from bipolar disorder. He was recently released from a mental hospital where he has spent the last 8 months of his life after taking a plea bargain for attacking a man he caught his wife having an affair with. Pat is now living with his mother and father (Robert De Niro) who want nothing more then to see Pat get back on his feet and share in their love of the Philadelphia Eagles. Pat however has his own plans to stay positive and improve himself, which includes his new obsession with his physical fitness, in an attempt to win back his estranged wife. During one of his daily jogs, he meets up with an old friend and is invited over to dinner. This is where we meet Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), a girl suffering from severe depression after her husband was tragically killed. Pat and Tiffany begin an odd friendship when Pat finds out that Tiffany might be able to contact his wife and give her a letter despite the restraining order she has on him. As part of a deal they work out, Tiffany will deliver this letter if Pat agrees to team up with her for a dance competition. As this film continues, we as an audience are shown a brief look into the world of mental illness and the crazy circumstances that bring people together.

This film is getting a lot of Oscar buzz, including a best picture nomination, and I can see why. The story is a huge break from the rut we find ourselves in when most romantic films are made. Bradley Cooper gives one of his best performances. Robert De Niro was amazing, probably the best performance I have seen in the last 10 years. I was also very surprised by Jennifer Lawrence who showed that her acting range is much broader then simply staring in the next teen blockbuster. This film was directed by David O. Russell, who also directed the 2010 film, "The Fighter". If you enjoyed "The Fighter" or any film shot with a bit of an independent film feel to it should feel at home with this films' style.

All in all I have to say if you are looking for a date night movie you might both enjoy, I can recommend nothing better then "Silver Linings Playbook." This movie can speak a little to everyone and show another side of human nature that many do not take the time to talk about. However, even if you wait for the DVD release do yourself a favor and check this one out.
