DVD Daily 01/20/13 "Frankenweenie"

For my first DVD daily post I checked out Tim Burton's Frankenweenie.  This is the forth stop motion feature film from Tim Burton and the first that is not a musical.  The story is based on an original idea and short film made by Tim Burton in 1984.  The film revolves around a boy, Victor Frankenstein, who is a loner with his only friend being his dog, Sparky.  When Sparky is tragically killed in an accident, Victor turns to an idea he received from his science teacher, Mr. Rzykruski, to use electricity harnessed from lightening to bring his beloved dog back from the dead.  As rumors spread around the school that Victor has succeeded in bringing Sparky back, the other kids set off on a plan to steal Victors experiment and use it to win the science fair.  What follows is a tale of chaos released upon the local town and the one boy who can save them.

Tim Burton's most recent tale, while entertaining, is not his best stop motion tale (that is still reserved for Nightmare Before Christmas.)   Anyone familiar with Tim Burton's other stop motion films will not see anything different in this movie.  The characters' faces resemble skeletons or other horror monsters, and it still has plenty of references to horror classics.  The film tells a story of love and loss in its own quirky Tim Burton way.  All I can really say is, if you enjoy Tim Burton's other works you will more than likely enjoy this new tale.  However, if you are looking for something new or out of the ordinary this may not quite be the film for you.  Either way, I say give it a shot.

I give Frankenweenie 3.5 out of 5 electrified dogs.
